On Learning

Truth to be told, I was never a good student. ‘Good’ in the sense that my grades were almost always average to borderline pass to “improvement required”. Studying and trying to do well in 9 subjects (7 of which I have no interest in) seems to be really hard work. Fast forward 10 years later, and I have very little memory of what I studied (to which I believe most people will agree with me).

Sometime late last year, Annie had me watch this video on YouTube with her. It’s called ‘Changing Education Paradigms’, from RSA and Sir Ken Robinson, Professor Emeritus at the University of Warwick, UK and author of New York Times Best Seller, ‘The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything’. You can watch it here if you’ve got 12 minutes to spare – it’s quite fascinating, for a short documentary.

Being someone who doesn’t really like conformity, it’s comforting to know that there are great thinkers presenting this kind of information – to educate and to challenge the current status quo.

“You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiousity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives” ~ Clay P.Bedford

That’s what I think learning is – firstly being curious enough to want to know the answers, then having the will and determination to find them.

More next week.
